Etymology 1

The function of this preposition was previously done with the use of sē, sēd (see Template:M, Template:M), from Template:Der, thus meaning "by itself", "without". Some still refer the si- in sine to this root, others refer it to Template:Der, whence Template:M. And as sometimes nesi was also written, with -ne being Template:M, sine might literally mean "not this". Compare with Template:M.

Yet others refer sine to Template:Der, itself possibly related to Template:M or more likely a locative of Template:M.[3][4] Thus cognate with Template:Cog, Template:M, Template:Cog, Template:Cog; compare especially Template:Cog and Template:Cog (Template:Cog), which may reflect the original PIE adverb.

The ablative is from a PIE ablative of separation or a comitative-instrumental analogous to Template:M. Compare Template:M+.
