Etymology

The native form in most dialects was Template:Inh, whence the variant Template:M. In parts of the Eifel, this Template:M regularly becomes Template:M (compare Template:Cog). In southern and eastern dialects, on the other hand, Template:M may have been inherited from the Old High German variant Template:M (Template:M). From these two groups of dialects, the form will have spread, without doubt under influence of Template:Der.

Etymology

Template:Inh+, Template:M (nominative form), from Template:Inh (compare Template:M from the Old French oblique form Template:M, from the Latin accusative form Template:M). Its pronominal use is of Template:Cog origin. Compare Template:Cog, reduced form of Template:Cog; Template:Cog; Template:Cog; Template:Cog. In the second sense, meaning "we", also compare the development Template:Noncog and the dialectal forms found in eastern Indonesia: kitorang, kitong, torang.

Usage notes

  • In informal and standard conversational French, Template:M has almost completely replaced the pronoun Template:M to indicate that a sentence or clause has a first-person plural as its subject. However, Template:M is still favored in formal writing and speech, and is still used colloquially as a disjunctive reinforcing nominative Template:M, as well as to indicate direct and indirect objects. It may be used for reflexive objects, but as this is potentially ambiguous, these are also indicated with the reflexive pronoun Template:M — especially with reinforcement from disjunctive Template:M, which clarifies that the speaker means "we" and not "one," i.e. a generalized indefinite subject. This clarification can also be achieved by the use of Template:M.
    Template:Uxi
    Template:Uxi
    Template:Uxi
    Template:Uxi
  • The verb is always conjugated in the third-person singular, but if the pronoun refers to a first-person plural, the attribute agrees in gender and number.
    Template:Uxi
    Template:Uxi
    Template:Uxi
  • The variant Template:M is used in more formal or literary contexts. Some use it especially after Template:M (Template:M) to avoid the contraction Template:M, which is homophonous with the vulgar word Template:M.
