From Template:Inh, from Template:Der, from Template:Der, from Template:Der (compare Template:Der), from Template:Der. Probably named after the city Velur (modern day Template:M) in southern India. The first glasses, manufactured in Italy around 1300, were made of Template:M. The meaning “toilet seat” is newer and derived from the similarity in shape to a single eyeglass. The word thus forms a Template:Doublet.
